Charitable Work

Over the past few years the traders have made a number of donations to local charities and good causes. For example, The Willen Hospice received a cheque donation of £220 . This sum was made up by traders holding raffles with prizes donated out of traders funds. The traders have also donated cash to the then acting Chairman of the Council, Ken Sharer. He ,as Chairman, supported a number of local charities. One of these being ,The Buzzer Bus. This charity brings local people (the old, the disabled etc.) to the market and are run by volunteers. The traders also helped to raise funds to send a local girl with a long suffering illness, to Florida. They did this by asking the public and traders alike to give any lose change to cover the steps of the Market Cross. Over £419 was raised.

All Saints Church Steeple Appeal Fund. This Appeal was chosen because the Church is central to Leighton Buzzard and can be seen from many miles around . The traders can often tell how bad weather conditions are getting by how visible the spire is. The appeal needed £150,000 to be able to renovate the spire which was damaged by fire in 1985. Since that original estimate was made, the on going renovation work has revealed more damage and the new estimate has reached approximately £500,000. Hearing this, the traders donated £500 out of their funds.

The traders have helped local marathon runner Richard Broom in his bid to raise funds for Cancer Research UK. They gave Richard £500 to start his campaign. There was a further £75 raised the day before the run by the collection of loose change. To date, Richard has raised in excess of £2160. His overall total for marathon running stands at around £8000 +!

Traders have sponsored local man, Gordon Beaney, along with other family members and friends in their quest to raise £1,000 for the Pasque Hospice, Luton. They promised £250 on completion of the jump. The family parachuted 12,000 feet in late October 2004 and in the proccess raised over £2,500!
